Truss grips still in the box

The roof is held down by small pieces of metal that are easy to forget.

Owner Inspections · Pakenham East 3810 · 2026-05-06

In short: Triple grips are cheap, quick and structural. They are also the item most often left uninstalled.

What a truss grip does

It ties each truss to the top plate so the roof resists uplift. Without it the roof is resting on the walls rather than fixed to them.

What we recorded

Grips absent at multiple truss positions on a home where the rest of the frame was otherwise well built.

Roof bracing too

On the same job the roof bracing had not been installed, which is the other half of how a roof structure stays square under load.

Timing

Frame stage, once trusses are up and before sarking. After lining, the roof space is accessible but awkward and items get missed.

What good looks like

Grips at every nominated position, fully nailed, with bracing installed and fixed to the pattern on the truss layout.

FAQ

Questions Pakenham East owners ask about this

Is this dangerous?

It is a structural non conformity rather than an immediate hazard. It matters most in the wind event the tie down was designed for.

Who supplies the grips?

They come with the truss package. Being left out is a fixing oversight rather than a supply problem.

Can it be fixed after plaster?

Usually yes, from within the roof space, though access makes it slower and more expensive than doing it at frame.

Does the truss fabricator certify this?

The fabricator certifies the truss design. Installation and tie down on site are the builder's responsibility.
