The rangehood that vented into the roof
Warm wet air, delivered to the worst possible place.
In short: An exhaust duct that stops in the roof space is not ducted. It is a humidity problem with a fan attached.
What it should do
Carry cooking moisture and grease out of the building through an external termination.
What we recorded
The duct was absent entirely, with the rangehood discharging directly into the roof cavity above the kitchen.
Why it matters over time
Moist air condenses on the underside of cold roofing, wets insulation and eventually shows as staining or mould on the ceiling below.
Bathroom fans as well
The same finding turns up on extraction fans, where duct connections are made loosely or left disconnected at one end.
Getting it closed out
It is a handover item with a clear remedy, and it is far easier to have done before you sign than after you move in.
